
The 4 Percent, 11 December 2025 – At CITES’ latest conference parties delivered some big wins for endangered wildlife by strengthening trade protections for over 120 species. But there were also clear limits: systemic resource strains led delegates to drop focused work on marine ornamental fishes—critically threatened species not yet listed under CITES that would benefit from regulation. This gap highlights how the global wildlife trade system still fails to fully safeguard many vulnerable marine species.
