
Buenos Aires, 26 May 2026 – Argentine authorities seized over 700 live marine animals—surgeonfishes, pufferfishes, lionfishes, and butterflyfishes—shipped illegally from Kenya to Buenos Aires. Destined for aquariums, many arrived dead after 120 hours in transit. Conservationists call it an “industrialized crime”—the third seizure at the same airport in a year.
These species aren’t protected under CITES, but the smugglers violated national laws anyway. CITES protection would have meant far harsher penalties.
